The Smallest Island in the World: Bishop Rock

Bishop Rock is located in the Irish Sea near England and is recognized by the Guinness World Records as "the world's smallest inhabited island." With an approximate area of 46 square meters, the island is home to only a single lighthouse, built in 1858 as a vital navigation point for sailors. Although there is no permanent population, maintenance personnel have occasionally stayed on the island to manage the lighthouse operations.

The definition of an island can vary based on geographical criteria. Generally, for a landmass to be classified as an island, it must remain above water permanently. Therefore, rocky outcrops or temporary land formations that become visible only at certain times do not qualify as islands.

Although Bishop Rock holds the title for the smallest island, other formations have been considered for this distinction based on different criteria. However, its iconic lighthouse and adherence to the definition of an island have cemented its status as a unique geographical feature.
