Initial reactions to "Joker: Folie à Deux" (Joker 2) were mixed. The first film was a massive success due to its deep character study and dark tone, setting high expectations for the sequel. However, sequels often struggle to match the impact of an original masterpiece.

This time, Joker 2 took a different route by adding musical elements and highlighting Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga. These changes excited some but disappointed others. Still, Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix’s involvement gave the film credibility.

Whether a third film happens depends on box office results. With a $200 million budget, it earned only $50 million in its opening weekend, far below the first film’s $96 million debut. Pushing Joker’s story forward could be risky, as its appeal lies in originality and depth, which sequels can struggle to maintain.

In my opinion, the musical elements could’ve been reduced. The story seemed to hint at Harley helping Joker escape and continuing his rebellion. As a psychologist, she could’ve sought to restore justice in her way—or even intended to kill Joker herself for her version of justice. That tension would’ve been powerful.

Harley’s transformation—from analyzing Joker to falling for him and embracing her dark side—is familiar. However, a story exploring her suffering and society’s rejection, leading her to join Joker, would’ve been more compelling.
